Our history—and our name—reminds us why this Post exists. VFW Post 5456 proudly bears the name Pulliam-Burton in honor of two sets of brothers from right here in Elberton who gave their lives in service to our nation during World War II. These young men answered the call to defend freedom, and their sacrifice came at the highest possible cost.
When this Post was chartered on February 22, 1946, just months after the end of the war, the community made a deliberate choice to ensure those brothers—and all who made the ultimate sacrifice—would never be forgotten. By naming this Post Pulliam-Burton, Elberton forever tied their legacy to our mission: remembrance, service, and commitment to our fellow veterans.
For 80 years, this post has been more than a building. It has been a gathering place, a support system, and a promise—that no veteran stands alone. Generations have been members of Post 5456, each leaving their mark through service, sacrifice, and dedication to something greater than themselves. Today, we honor all who came before us and recommit ourselves to carrying that legacy forward.
The Morale, Wellness & Recreation Center represents that commitment to the future.
This project would not be possible without partnership, generosity, and belief in the mission—and first and foremost, we want to extend our deepest gratitude to the Elks Lodge. Without your support, encouragement, and partnership, we simply would not be here today. Your belief in this vision helped turn an idea into reality, and we are profoundly grateful for your continued commitment to veterans and our community.
We also want to sincerely thank the City of Elberton, our civic organizations, and the many local businesses and donors whose generosity made this center possible. Every contribution—large and small—helped move us from plans on paper to a space that now stands ready to serve. Your investment is not just in a room, but in people—our soldiers, our veterans, and their families.
This MWR will be a modern, high-tech environment designed to support connection, recovery, and resilience.
Our goal is bold and intentional: to create a space for the soldiers of HHB, 1-214th Field Artillery, and for all veterans, that is truly unmatched in the state of Georgia—a place where service members can decompress, connect, train, and recharge; a place that reflects the respect and appreciation they have earned.
This center stands as a symbol of what can happen when a community comes together with a shared purpose. It reflects Elbert County at its best—supporting those who have answered the call to serve, and ensuring they continue to have support long after the uniform is hung up.
